How to Replace Your Old mattress with a New mattress

scroll down to see how you can pay less than $400 for a Memory foam (queen) mattress!

When George and I first got married we inherited my family’s old guest bedroom mattress– We were so young and limber that we didn’t need a brand new mattress and slept great on the hand me down.

Fast forward 8 years.

After two pregnancies, three kids and countless backaches later–we really needed a new mattress. I think when you are pregnant, you feel every single little imperfection with an old mattress. Everything hurts and you probably end up finding somewhere else in the house to sleep where you find comfort (at least, that was for me!) Then you have a baby and you feel 100 x’s better then suddenly you can’t afford a brand-spanking-new mattress!

Update 1/29/2016: We have had this mattress for 9 months and STILL love it! We are in the market for a smaller mattress for our guest room and are probably going to purchase one with our tax refund.

So here we are– we need a NEW mattress! I have to admit, I don’t want just any mattress either. I cherish my sleep and comfort. Now I want a mattress that will help me sleep better. We’ve looked into mattress stores– a lot of them are too expensive. I want to sleep well, not sleep broke!

When you are ready to replace your mattress– I HIGHLY suggest sitting down and making bullet points about what you want in a mattress. That way, you aren’t suckered into things you do need.

Here is our wish list:

  • memory or gel layer
  • Queen or larger
  • less than $600
  • delivered for free

and since we are trying to be more natural — eco-friendly would be awesome also!

George calls me the Google queen.. and there is a good reason for that. I usually almost find a solution with google– and you better bet that I found a solution. We found  GREAT affordable queen mattresses right HERE.

The mattresses are Gel/memory foam and most are LESS than $600 + FREE shipping!!

Shop for a mattress ONLINE? Yes, I know! It’s a scary thing.. but sales guys at mattress stores are just as scary. I really wanted to avoid the hassle of dealing with salespeople.. It makes me feel like I’ll just be pressured to shop for things. The thing that caught my eye was that these mattresses have gel or memory foam and are under $600! That is literally impossible to find at the furniture store.

Then, I noticed that their mattresses are warranted against manufacturing defects for 10 years AND if you aren’t happy after 60 days trial they will refund your money and pay for the return shipping. No questions asked.

How could we NOT try this? I checked all of our wishlist items– including the Eco-friendly part! woot!

So, we took the plunge and got THIS mattress.  It’s only $389 + FREE shipping and is gel/memory foam! I won’t lie– I was pretty nervous to order online.. then about 4 days later, we got this huge box! (even the dogs were like “what the heck!)

The mattress is vacuumed sealed and rolled– it fit perfectly in the box!

It took about 3 hours for it to reach its FULL size. We just popped it right onto our existing box spring and waited for it to raise to fit it in our bed.

It’s an 8 inch, so it’s on the short side. It is a Gel-Memory foam (if you want the normal height, I suggest the 12-inch memory-gel mattress HERE it is only $599 + FREE shipping)  and it is pretty dang awesome! The gel is great for “hot” sleepers… It helps keep you cool and molds to your body. Sometimes memory foam stays MOLDED to your body and you get stuck with that permanent mold—but not this one. It goes back to a flat surface.

I’m pretty shocked but we LOVE it!

Even better, this is eco-friendly. So not only are we helping the environment–we’re saving money. Here are some great facts about these mattresses:

I love our mattress so much and the comfort it offers when I sleep on it. I reached out to the company to get you a couple of discounts if you want to replace your old mattresses (one awesome advantage of being a blogger! 😉 )

— Take $70 off ALL closeouts including the gel models use code Josie70 at check out (that makes the gel-memory foam 12 inch only $529 + FREE shipping!) code NEVER expires!

— Take $50 off ALL closeouts use code Josie50 at checkout Never expires

Here are some of the prices on mattresses after codes:

So when you are looking to replace your old mattress without going broke:

1. Make a LIST of what you want in a mattress before you do your research

2. only buy what you can afford–be careful in financing a mattress

3. NEVER pay for delivery. You are already giving them your money (just saying…)

4. Buy a mattress that will last– you shouldn’t have to replace your mattress for another 10 years.

Disclosure: I was provided with a zzzsleep mattress to blog about what I thought about it. I wasn’t compensated for it and would never blog about something I didn’t feel strongly about. 🙂 We needed an affordable mattress with comfort and I wanted to let you know about an awesome one.

We bought an certipur about a year ago because we went to mattress stores and were pretty grossed out by the sleazy sales guys. It was a little too firm for us so we ended up buying a softer memory foam topper for under 100 bucks and now it is perfect! I would definitely still recommend going this route because it was still under 700 dollars and the ones at the mattress stores were $1100 and up!

I swear sometimes you have my house bugged. I have been pricing mattresses online for the past week. Not only is my mattress cheap it has always been a little too firm for my liking. I found one that I liked but it was way way way out of my price range. I seriously thought about financing it but I slept on it and thought I could definitely find a better deal. Then you made this post. THANK YOU! How long have you had the mattress???

We’ve been sleeping on it for a month. WE LOVE it! George loves it as well because he sweats a lot in his sleep– it keeps him super cool (I suffer though, and can be too cold at night sometimes LOL)

I am just starting to look into getting a new bed and I am very interested in hearing that the one that you got can keep you cool. This is such good info, I thank you for this. 🙂

My fiance and I are looking into buying a new mattress, can you speak to how much it moves when you move? My fiance is a very restless sleeper, and our current spring mattress moves like there is an earthquake during the night, waking me up as well. We’re looking for a mattress that is firmer in that respect. We slept on a true memory foam mattress recently at a hotel, and that’s the only one we’ve found in which I don’t get disturbed when he moves at night.

    Thanks for the post,

My DH is 300lbs do you think this mattress could hold up under his weight?

Thank you for this post and the codes! We are looking to get a new mattress (because ours is also a hand-me-down, and completely gross…) but we are waiting for a few weeks until we move, so it was great finding this now! I was expecting to have to spend at least 1-2K on a new nice mattress, but this would be great for the budget!

personal referrals are awesome! I too bought a mattress on line 5 years ago. People thought I was nuts. But Overstock.com has thousands of reviews and i read almost every one. Mine came shipped for less than $3. and shipped they same way. vacuumed sealed. your personal referral will go a long way to help someone decide this route and save sooo much money.
thank you for all you do Josie.

Two Options without Salesperson and mostly In-Store.

Costco and Sam Club’s. In-Store or Online. Both will have mattress as much as 70% from B&M mattress store. Sadly, you have limited choices and pay for delivery unless you pick-up yourself.

Sam’s Club has 3-6 mattresses styles for you to try(Demo) at each location plus few more high-end one online.

Costco has 1 or 2 styles in-store and several online mainly higher end style.

Both have a generic box strings included in the price.

Note: even with shipping/delivery plus buying entire Sam’s Club or Costco Staff 15 pizza for lunch. They are still cheaper than Mattress stores, Macy’s, JC Pennies, etc.
