Best Essential Oils for Pets

Using essential oils for pets is nothing new; people have been using them for centuries! It’s essential (ha, get it?) to make sure you’re using essential oils in the right way, so that’s what this article will cover.

The most important part about using essentials – both for yourself and for your pets – is that you use therapeutic grade essential oils. Ordering essential oils online can be tricky, so just make sure you’re getting them from a reputable source before purchasing.

While essential oils can be used on most animals safely, some animals (like cats) metabolize and excrete things differently than other animals. So what is safe for a dog might not be safe for a cat, etc.

To use oils on cats and dogs, they must be diluted. For example, to get rid of fleas, use cedarwood and lavender oil and spray it on their fur. I use a few drops of each in a big spray bottle, but you can look up specific dilution amounts as well.

Dogs can use essential oils pretty much in the same way we do: by breathing them in while you’re holding the oils in your hand. Essential oils are used for aromatherapy in dogs, and are also used for many home remedies – like getting rid of fleas and ticks, and even ear infections!

Remember: don’t buy cheap oils – they are usually cheap for a reason!

I like using a mixture of a few oils to help with doggie anxiety:

Combine ½ ounce base oil (such as sweet almond oil), 3 drops Valerian, 2 drops Clary Sage, 5 drops Lavender, 3 drops Sweet Marjoram. Rub a small amount of this mixture together in the palm of your hands, and apply it to the edge of your dog’s ears.
